Quick Q’s with… Gaia!
Quick Q’s with… Gaia!

Quick Q’s with… is the series of articles that introduces you to the members and staff that make up Square Works, but with some fun questions, rather than the boring usual ones.

So, let’s start then shall we…

Who are you?
I’m Gaia

What company are you with?
I work for Fathom as a developer and I’m currently in my second year of my PhD at the Geography Department at University of Bristol.

What is it that you do?
My work (and my PhD) focuses on global stochastic flood modelling.

Where do you not mind waiting?
Anywhere close to a park or a bookshop. If I have my headphones and a good podcast to listen to, I’m sorted!

What is a piece of creative work that you love and why?
I would probably say Monet’s Water Lilies series, so beautiful!
Authors Note: Interesting point, Monet actually imported the water lilies for his garden from Egypt and South America. The local city council told him to remove the foreign plants so they wouldn’t poison the water, but he never did, and instead painted them in a series of paintings that showcased the plants in varying light and textures for the last 25 years of his life.

If you could un-invent one thing, what would it be?
Well, there are a few things that the world could do without if you ask me. Starting from nuclear weapons, landmines... but also fast fashion, excessive use of plastic packaging… It’s a difficult choice really!

Finally, can you give us a random quote that you know?
“Sucking at something is the first step to becoming sorta good at something”

So, now you know Gaia. If you ever have any questions for her, what to know more about Fathom, or want to chat to her about Monet’s paintings or her PhD, you can message her through the portal, or catch her at the next Prosecco Thursday!
